How the calculated price works

1Every price is what you would pay

A listing's price is the buyer total: the item, plus shipping, plus any fee the marketplace charges the buyer (Mercari adds 3.6%; eBay adds nothing; Pinny Shop adds $6 shipping under $59). That way a $20 pin with $8 shipping is not cheaper than a $25 pin that ships free.

2The cheapest listing, every day for 30 days

Each day, across eBay, Mercari, Pinny Shop and 3rd-party listings, the lowest total anyone is asking is recorded. If the pin was in stock anywhere, only in-stock prices count.

30 days with a listing. The lowest of all of them, $21.99, is what the card shows as Lowest 30 Day.

3The middle of those days: the asking price

Line the days up from cheapest to most expensive and take the one in the middle — the median. One unusually cheap day, or one seller asking far too much, cannot drag it around the way an average would.

4What it actually sold for

Asking is not selling. Every sale confirmed in the last 90 days is collected: Mercari's own sold listings, and eBay's count of units sold on a listing we tracked. Sales we only guess at — a listing that vanished, a drop in Pinny Shop's stock — never count toward the price.

A sale below 50% or above 200% of the asking price is set aside. Those are nearly always a lot of several pins, or a listing matched to the wrong pin.

5Blend the two, by how much the sales can be trusted

The calculated price moves from the asking price toward the sold price. How far depends on how many sales there are: one sale moves it a third of the way, two halfway, four two thirds, eight four fifths. A pin with no confirmed sales keeps its asking price exactly.

Nothing listed. With no active listings, the Pinny Shop price is the price.

Scarce. When nothing has been buyable for 30 days — Pinny Shop out of stock and no listings anywhere — the Pinny Shop price is boosted by 10–50%, from the pin's own history or, without one, how wanted it is on PinnyPals. The card says Scarce.

New. A pin released in the last 30 days has not filled its 30-day window yet; the card marks its price New and it will settle.

Suspicious. A price at least 3× both its own lowest in 30 days and what pins with similar demand sell for is flagged, not changed — usually one expensive listing sitting unsold.
